World Hypertension Day is observed every year on 17th May and forms part of Hypertension Awareness Month. It aims to raise global awareness about high blood pressure, promote prevention, detection, and control, and encourage action at individual, community, and health-system levels. The day was first announced in 2005 by the World Hypertension Federation (WFH).
Causes of high blood pressure:
– Heredity: If one family member has high blood pressure, the likelihood of the other family members having it is high.
– Age: The likelihood of high blood pressure increases with age.
– Obesity: People who are overweight
– Low physical activity
– Alcohol consumption
– High salt consumption
Complications of high blood pressure:
High blood pressure can cause complications such as heart disease, kidney failure, atherosclerosis, eye damage, and stroke.
Symptoms of high blood pressure:
- Severe headache
- Shortness of breath
- Nausea
- Chest pain
- Dizziness
- Blurred vision
- Fatigue
- Feeling a pulse in the head or neck
- Treatment of high blood pressure:
- Manage your weight.
- Get adequate physical activity and exercise
- Have a healthy lifestyle
- Quit smoking and alcohol
- Get adequate sleep
- Get proper nutrition
- Take medication under the supervision of a doctor
- Manage stress
